I've been busy getting ready for my first craft show and getting the house ready for winter.Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06576270359688148298noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-268706636349424568.post-65647832536293082392013-07-02T18:50:00.001-04:002013-07-02T18:50:45.420-04:00Not sure how to even start this post...My Dad passed away on June 20th. We've all been lost ever since. I was blessed to have him in my life for 49 years....oh, but what I wouldn't give to have more. My Mom and Dad were blessed with 55 years together and were so in love. He passed away at home in our arms. This is what I wrote and somehow managed to read for his memorial service because I really am lost as to how to explain what a great man he was and how much we miss him.

One lesson
that I learned from him has always stayed with me. I was about 12 or 13 and I drove my boat to
my friend Tut’s house which was about 5 miles down the lake from our home. It
was a small 10 ft aluminum boat with a little 10 HP motor that you steered from
the back. After spending the day at her place it was time to go back home. I called my parents to let them know I was coming
home – a rule they insisted on if I was to have the privilege of using that
little boat.

They told me
that the big part of the lake was rough and to make sure I had my life jacket
on. The bay that sheltered Tut’s house didn’t look too wavy at all so I didn’t
think too much of it – after all Lake Nosbonsing was never that rough – one of
the great things about small lakes. So I threw my life jacket on and started
home. Well when I headed out of that bay and onto the big part of the lake – I
saw what they meant. I had never seen waves that big before on the lake. The
waves started coming up over, and into the boat. I grabbed my bailing can and
started bailing the water out while steering with the other hand. Being a pretty
good swimmer – more like a water rat at that age - I’m not afraid to admit – I was terrified. I
thought about turning around and going back to my friend’s house but I
remembered what my Dad had taught me – how to ride with the waves, so I carried
on towards home. I was drenched and having a hard time seeing through the water
that was covering me every time I went down into another wave when all of a
sudden I saw my Dad in his boat coming to meet me. When he reached me he helped me into his
boat and tied my little one behind to tow it home. We had just started going
again when he stopped his boat, told me to get back into mine and he would
follow beside me. I remember thinking What? Why would he do that to me when I
was safe in his boat and terrified to go back into the little one. He simply said “If you’re going to be out on
the lake by yourself, you need to learn how to handle the rough waters as well
as the calm waters”.

handle the situation in front of me, I remember his words.

Couldn't find what I was looking for and after digging through many tubs and boxes decided it was time for a HUGE summer sale. I won't show pics of my room but it's cleaned up and organized now - somewhat! It's over flowing so it's time to get rid of some stuff.

I've spend the last couple of days listing items on ebay and there will be more coming! Most of the items start at only $2.00. Great time to start Christmas shopping of pick up something for yourself *wink*. Check back often as I have a ton of stuff to add.
Hubby and I started watching the first season of Downton Abbey last night and we went through to the 4th episode. I am HOOKED! What a great series and the antiques...wow!

I have to admit though my heart strings get pulled more towards the antiques in Cranford (another great show).

If you love the primitive decor of the late 1800's early 1900's you will enjoy both of these shows!Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06576270359688148298noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-268706636349424568.post-4844157627417787422013-02-07T17:01:00.000-05:002013-02-07T17:01:35.300-05:00Another stay in Hospital

Back home and feeling better after another round with my pancreas! I was admitted on Friday Feb 1st and released Tuesday Feb 5th - so it was much shorter than the stint I did in 2008/2009 - that was 2 full weeks of the worse pain short of child birth! UGGH. Apparently I have some calcium build up in the pancreatic duct but they can't be 100% positive because I can't have the MRI that is required to verify it. As many of you know, I had a brain aneurysm in 1989 and I have a metal clip in my head along with some metal staples to secure the part of the skull they had to take out to fix the aneurysm.....so, no MRI for me because it could cause problems with the clip and staples moving! MENTAL NOTE: - Stay as far away from MRI machines as possible!!!

For the past 2 days I've been doing a ton of research on the pancreas and what triggers these attacks. Alcohol or Gall stones are the main culprits but smoking and certain medications can as well.

Gallbladder - CT Scan and Ultrasound say no visible gall stones but doc says there could be some very tiny ones not showing up - said the same thing last time I had this too.

Alcohol - Not gonna lie...I do like to have a few cocktails....I am French Canadian after all.*smile*

But what I didn't know and was never even suggested to me was that STRESS could be the cause of it! I have learned through forums and web sites that a ton of people that have this affliction swear that it's stress that causes it. Many of these people have had their gallbladders removed, don't smoke or drink alcohol yet continue to have pancreatic problems. - That would make perfect sense to me considering what we went through last Wednesday and Thursday (the days before I was admitted to the hospital).

For those of you that don't already know or who are new followers, we live in our own living quarters that are attached to my parents house and business. My parents have their own living quarters as well and there is an additional apartment in the basement which our youngest daughter Shelby is living in - a multi generational home more or less.

Wednesday we woke to a torrential downpour outside- it was REALLY coming down. Even though it was January in NORTHERN Ontario....weird...I know! The week before this thaw we had been getting dumped on with a LOT of snow which was now melting and with the rain coming out of the sky, had no where to go. I'm sure you can all see where this is going... I'll keep it as short as possible and put it in point form.

*My Dad who is 80 years old and on oxygen (and having a really hard time breathing) decided to go downstairs to check on the sump pump in the basement.

*Dad comes up the stairs completely out of breathe - call your brother quick!

*Mom calls my brother Vic and tells him to get out here asap.

*I go out to woodshed to get a hose that will be needed to hook up spare sump pump. Some critter decided it would be a good meal but we did what every other person would do - put duct tape on it!

*Basement is flooding - sump pump can't keep up.

*Spare sump pump doesn't work when plugged in.

*Dad tells me to shut off the hot water tank and furnace breaker - I accidentally shut off main breaker to the house and store!

*Tell Dad proudly..."hot water tank and furnace are off" (at this point I didn't know I shut the main breaker off)

*Run to town to get another pump while hubby, brother, and friend use the shop vac to fill bucket after bucket with water to be hauled up the stairs and outside. They can't keep up but stop it from getting a lot worse.

*Return from town an hour later with new pump. Half hour one way trip so I made good time considering I went into Home Depot and picked out pump and hose and made it back within the hour.

*Hook up new pump and MacGuyver a hole out the basement window to pump water out quickly!

*All of the above was done while standing in ice cold water with wet boots! (I'm buying a good pair of work rubber boots next week!)

*Basement is drained and we're thinking about how to hook up the new pump because the one in place wasn't keeping up. Turns out there is a problem with the hose that it's attached too - probably froze up at the other end where it comes out. We'll work on that in the spring.

*I go upstairs and tell Dad that the basement is drained and he explains to me what should happen when I turn the furnace and hot water tank back on. (There's a whoosh sound when the pilot light lights and then the burner will start)

*I flip the breaker switch for the furnace - NO whoosh NO sound of the burner starting.

*I reluctantly go upstairs to tell Dad. I know he's gonna want to come back down and he just can't do stairs any more! WHY OH WHY DIDN'T I PAY ATTENTION TO ALL THIS HOUSE STUFF BEFORE????????????

*Side note - Hubby is a very intelligent TECHNICAL man - he's a software engineer who can do things with a computer that baffle most minds, but in all honesty, I'm the handy <strike>man</strike> woman of the house.

*Dad comes downstairs. Tells me to try the switch on the hot water heater - which works. YAY!

*Mom yells from upstairs that there's no water...cold or hot.

*Dad realizes what's happened and shows me the correct switch for the furnace and explains that I shut off the main breaker.

*Main breaker back on. Furnace still doesn't work. Cold water tank not holding pressure.

*We try everything my Dad tells us to but still can't get the furnace to stay lit or the water tank to hold pressure. I know my Dad could have got all this going by himself in a few minutes but God Bless the man, he just can't do it any more and just knowing that, is hard enough on him.

*Meanwhile one of our customers Rick, who used to work here with my Dad in the garage, comes into the store while Mom is just getting off the phone with a repairman.

*He comes downstairs to take a look and tries to bleed the furnace - whatever that means. At this point I'm more worried about my Dad than anything else and am trying to stay out of the way in the basement.

*He not only got the furnace running again but got the water tank to hold pressure. THANK YOU RICK!

*Mom makes call to cancel repairman.

*House has heat and water now and basement is drying out!

*Now time to deal with the 5 inches of ice that's built up on the slope of our roof before it starts leaking in the house again. Another story for another day but let's just say this has happened before.

*Still wearing soaking wet boots, hubby and I trek out to the back yard to get ladder to put calcium blocks on roof to melt ice build up.

*Sink to top of boots walking through the slush in yard. Pouring rain. Wet to the bone we get the pucks on the roof. I forgot to mention that I'm sicker than a dog with the worse cold I've had all winter and am positive it will be pneumonia in the morning....THANK GOD it wasn't :)

*Once inside I sit down for first time since driving to town for pump.

*Oldest daughter Santana calls.....she's dealing with a leaky ceiling and basement in her town-house.

*Clothes in dryer. Dry clothes on.

*Check on Mom and Dad...been a hell of a day for them and I'm worried about them.

*Santana calls back....her ceiling has collapsed and is dealing with landlord and insurance man. Bed and TV ruined and now ceiling in baby Evelynn's room is leaking. They have to stay in a hotel for the night. They will be dry and safe...GOOD.

*Dad flushes toilet at some point and notices it's not flushing good and making that lovely noise that we've all come to know as a full septic tank....you know...the gurgling rumbling sound that warns you it's about to blow? That's the one!

*Call the septic guy...but because of the flooding, they're backed up (pun intended) too. Can't get here til Friday.

READY TO CRY AT THIS POINT! - REALLY!

*Decide to have a drink to calm my nerves....then another, then one more before bed. That's 3 very mild drinks. I was too tired to have more even if I wanted to.

*Wake up the next morning (Thursday) to a flash freeze and more snow. Dad has Dr. appointment in town and Santana needs a ride back from insurance appt. she had that morning. Drive to town on a rink....literally! The roads are GLARE ice - not salted or sanded yet. Highways are closed due to multiple accidents. Slowest trip to town I think I've ever made but we made it back safe and sound - Thank you GOD!

*Something else happened that day too but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. Guess I started blocking things out from that point on.

*Had 2 or 3 mild drinks that night.
*Woke up Friday morning in agony. Called ambulance. Admitted to hospital.

Morphine helped the pain- a bit. No water. No food. And all I did was lay in bed worrying about every one and every thing at home the whole time I was there.

I'm home. Can't eat or drink much yet, but I'm home and hopefully on the mend :)

P.S.
New report out here about the effects of Pepsi on your pancreas. If you drink a lot of soda you need to read this.
P.S.S.
I was drinking 3-4 cans a day.
P.S.S.S
I don't drink pepsi, alcohol or smoke cigarettes any more. It's been seven days and it's hard but I'm taking it one craving at a time. Can't decide what I want more a pepsi or a smoke!

A few weeks ago we had a January thaw...which is normal, but this year it was so warm, all the snow melted and the grass was showing. Then we hit a deep freeze for about a week. -40C (without the wind-chill) is just too darn cold!Today, we're getting snow but tomorrow and Wednesday, they're calling for a high of +7C with rain!

Hailie and I have managed to catch another nasty cold that has lasted 4 weeks now....we're both really tired of being sick. We've had 2 colds and a stomach flu since October!

We did get out this past weekend to go for a ride and take some photos. We drove out on the lake and walked a bit on the ice to take some photos. It was a beautiful warm sunny day! Would have been a great day for fishing!

Here are a few photos of Christmas and our winter wonderland. No photos of New Years as we were all in bed before midnight. You can tell that you're getting older when you could care less about New Year's parties or even watching the festivities on TV :)
This is our neighbour's tree - it's hard to tell from this photo, but it's about 75 feet tall. New neighbours moved into the house next door this past Fall and I was so happy to see them light up this tree for Christmas...I LOVE it :)

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I was having a hard time emotionally to get into the Christmas spirit after what happened at Sandy Hook - it hit me harder than anything I've ever watched on the news. God Bless all those families and help them in the new year ahead.

I've been busy painting my kitchen chairs black....something I've been wanting to do for ages and I'm finally getting it done :)

Anyway, I wanted to let you all know that I've been busy working on some Christmas ornaments and pot holders. Some are listed on Ebay and there are more in the works that will be listed soon. Here's a link if you want to check them out...http://www.ebay.com/sch/primcountrycupboard/m.html?item=261124346077&ssPageName=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562

These were a challenge as anyone that's ever done cross stitch can tell you that;

1. It's hard on the eyes no matter what size aida cloth or fabric you use.

2. It's very time consuming work.

3. These were extra hard as those little holes you put your needle into weren't there!

I love how they turned out though and am working on a couple more that need finishing. I'll share when I get them done. These were completely hand stitched - no sewing machine used. I think I need new glasses...LOL

You can find them on Ebay here

These were free patterns from Betty. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us :)
It's been a busy summer so far - not much time for posting so I thought I would share what we've done in photos. Grab some coffee and sit back and visit with us for a while :)

We've taken many road trips to Amish Country which is only a 20 minute ride from us. It's gorgeous country farmland and it's my "Happy Place". I hope to move there some day but for now I'm happy taking car rides there to de-stress. I can get lost on the back roads for hours! Good thing Miss Pearl likes it too :)

This particular day the men were at their small school chopping wood for the winter. I asked if I could take some photos and they said yes. I didn't take any photos of the men themselves though, as I know they don't like that so I stuck to horses, buggies, and beautiful scenery.

It was another gorgeous day here today and last night we enjoyed fireworks in our small town. The display was shorter than past years but wonderful just the same. I guess money is tight all over.

Miss Pearl enjoyed the fireworks, just not the loud noise that accompanies them so we had to cover her ears. Next year I'll bring head phones to cover them...hehe
This is the old part of the school that is perfect for photos. This building is amazing inside and out with original woodwork including classroom doors and high wooden baseboards all around. Of course the students weren't too fussy about climbing 5 flights of stairs to go to their classes. The newer part of the school is nice too but I'm partial to old buildings like this.

It was a wonderful day! I'm so very proud of her and excited for her to begin the next stage of her life but on the other hand I'm sad to see this part over. My baby is growing up!

They have a dinner and dance tonight and then a camping party to attend after the dance. There will be a lot of tired teenagers (and some very tired adults that are chaperoning the party) tomorrow judging by the amount of tents that were at their friend Jeff's place.

We knew she had won a $500 bursary (they mailed us a notice) and she was given a letter from her school saying that she needed to attend. We weren't sure if she had won another one because it was all very hush hush...the students were just told that they had won an award and needed to attend. Well she did win another one! Another $400 bursary! So that's $900 in total towards her tuition which is REALLY going to help! Plus we've applied for this new Ontario Tuition Grant that she will probably recieve too and that's another $770 that doesn't need to be paid back like a student loan! That will cover almost half of her first year in College.

There were only 85 bursaries/scholarships given out and she won 2 of them! We are so proud of her! So I now have 2 girls in College :) and Miss Pearl will be starting JK in another year.

Santana, my oldest, has gone back to school too. She just started a couple of weeks ago. She's studying to become a Paralegal and she's loving the course! She passed her equivalency test (GED) and enrolled in a business college in the city. We are so proud of her for going back to school...it's hard to go back once you've gotten a taste of the working world and are out on your own!

In other news....hehe, I've just listed a new Halloween Banner and Candle Mat on Ebay.
My eye is healing nicely. I've only lost one of the stitches so far - 4 or 5 more to go! It's really annoying having those stitches in so I can't wait for them to go away. It's like having a bunch of long eye lashes in your eye that you can't take out! Hailie and I are counting down the days until I can lift her (and other things) again....2 more to go!
Happy Thursday Everyone!Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06576270359688148298noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-268706636349424568.post-31702619511056585462012-05-30T08:57:00.000-04:002012-05-30T08:57:50.624-04:00Bursary and ScholarshipsMy baby girl won a $500.00 bursary yesterday and she was notified from the school that she has to be at the awards ceremony next week to accept a scholarship. They won't tell her which one or how much because it's a surprise to all of the winners. I am SO VERY PROUD of her! I know she will do an amazing job in college. She's been accepted into the Police Foundations course at 4 different colleges but she chose to go to our local college...which makes this Mama bear very happy that she'll still be at home :)Conniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06576270359688148298noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-268706636349424568.post-65811784108731286622012-05-28T09:46:00.001-04:002012-05-28T09:46:42.085-04:00Want a Do Over for this weekend!Well this weekend has been a rough one. I had my eye surgery on Friday. Miss Pearl fell and sprained her ankle while I was away in Ottawa for the operation and refused to even try to put any weight on it until yesterday so my parents had to carry her around all weekend. She finally started walking (with a bit of a limp) on it yesterday. Good thing because I can't lift anything for 2 weeks.

Then my oldest daughter was in a car accident yesterday. They were trying to avoid being hit by another car and her boyfriend sped up to get out of the way of it. They hit loose gravel and rolled in the ditch. Thank God everyone is OK. She's got a bit of a sore neck and back and baby granddaughter Evelynn cut her toe a bit - no stitches just a bandaid that she won't keep on. Her boyfriend is OK and his brother who was in the back seat with the baby hurt his arm shielding Evelynn when they rolled. Here's a photo of the car.

Just a quick note to let you all know I'm still around. Had a couple of trips to Ottawa in the past month and an eye operation yesterday. I'm not sure if I mentioned this on my blog before or not, but I had a brain aneursym when I was 24 that left me blind for a year and a half and the eyesight never came back in my right eye. Over the years it started turning to the outside of the eye to the point of giving me double vision. It got worse over the past 2 years so I decided to get it fixed. I still don't have full vision out of that eye and never will due to the scarring that occured when the aneurysm burst but the operation I had will help with the double vision and will stop my eye from moving to the far right as it was. It's only been one day and I already notice a huge difference. Hurts like hell right now because they had to cut the muscles on both sides of the eye and I have stitches in my eye but I'm hopeful that I'll feel better in a few days.

I'll save y'all and I won't post a pic cause it's pretty gross looking...LOL

Hope to catch up on all my fav blogs soon.
