5.5 Earthquake!

Today, around 2 PM we had an earthquake. It shook the house pretty good too! Apparently it originated about 3 hours east of us along the Ontario/Quebec border and was felt all across Ontario and parts of the US! I was laying down in bed with grandbaby, putting her down for her afternoon nap, when I felt the bed shake. Hailie had just fallen asleep and I turned over to face the wall when I felt 5 thumps on the bed. I thought she had some kind of leg twitch because it felt like she had lifted her leg and dropped it down on the bed. I rolled over to check on her and she was sound asleep so I blew it off. I even thought to myself maybe it was an earthquake - never really thinking it would be, but when I got up a few minutes later my daughters who were both in the kitchen said they felt it too and that's when they started getting messages from their friends online saying there was an earthquake. A few minutes later it was all over the news. It's funny because it traveled quicker on Facebook and MSN than the news channels...LOL. The only damage it caused here was a broken board on one of my benches and quite a few petals fell off my hanging baskets of flowers.

They're Back!

It's Shadfly season and it's about to get stinky! I took this photo a few minutes ago of a Shadfly resting on the screen of my back door. We're kind of lucky where I live because we only get a handful of the mouth-less bugs a year. North Bay which is only 15 minutes away, on the other hand, will soon be covered in the rotting, decomposing, fish smelling, nasty bugs that crunch under your feet as you walk down the street. If you think I'm kidding, visit this site for more info http://www.shadfly.com. Thankfully they only last a couple of weeks!

Welcome Summer!

Happy Summer everyone! I plan on spending most of this gorgeous day outside. It's sunny and warm, the lawn is mowed, the lemonade's on ice, and the baby's wading pool is callin' her name! I hope wherever you are, you get a chance to enjoy this longest day of the year :)

Academic Award

My youngest daughter is doing amazing in high school. Her marks are in the 80’s and 90’s. The other night she received an Academic Award for having the highest mark in her music/guitar class – a 98!  She LOVES music and has wanted to learn to play the guitar for years now but we could never afford lessons, so when we saw this course in school for free AND she gets credit for it, it was perfect!

This photo was taken after the ceremony in front of the oldest part of her school. This part was built in 1930 and is absolutely gorgeous inside as well as outside. The inside halls all have high wooden baseboards and old wooden doors like the ones on the front in the picture.  Of course the students prefer the newer addition to the “yucky” old part of the school but hopefully someday they’ll realize what a wonderful old building they had to learn in.

Congratulations Shelby! I’m  so proud of you!

Sunday Road Trips

Today we went for a drive to a tiny village about an hour west of us called Restoule - population roughly 500, give or take a few. Restoule is cottage country and the population expands over the summer months when tourists travel here and to the nearby Provinical Park. The drive is beautiful any time of year and each season offers something new to see. Here are a few photos I took along the way. You can click on the photos for a larger view.

This is one of the 3 churches they have. One of the other churches is right beside this one. (see second photo) Notice the lake in the background? What a wonderful view they must have before entering and leaving the church.

Here’s a better shot of the lake.

There were some cement stairs and a railing off the side of the rest stop where I took this photo so we followed it and found this wonderful natural spring shooting out crystal clear water! Of course we had to bend down and scoop some up in our hands to taste. It was great!

I thought this was a unique photo in the fact that there were 3 barns from 3 different farms so close together.

We passed a marsh that was completely covered in water lilies. I can just imagine the noise that all the frogs make here at night!

And the lupines are out everywhere alongside the roads – absolutely one of my favourite wildflowers!

Here are 2 houses that have seen much better days. I always wonder what stories they hold. The first one is on the front of a homestead  farm that has a newer home in the back and the rest of the property is well landscaped and neat. I bet the house holds some special memories and that’s why the owner won’t tear it down – but that’s just a guess.

ruins2

This one stands abandoned and in ruins but I bet it was really cute in it’s time.

This is one of the roads not far from our house that leads to another tiny lake. My favourite time of year to visit this place is the fall – the colors are incredible! Looks pretty good this time of year too :)
